MANUFACTURING PROCESS
-
MATERIALS-SOURCES
Pelican Reef is committed to buying and using all materials from rattan and hardwood to finishing materials from reputable and renewable suppliers. We seek appropriate evidence that suppliers are in compliance with this policy.
As different sources become more available, the company will give preference to suppliers wherever practical and will not purchase any materials that are known to have originated from dubious sources or are prohibited by law.
Pelican Reef strives to use materials that are processed in an environmentally responsible manner, or consist of a high level of recycled material. For example, our finishing materials and stains used in our furniture products now consist of 75% water-based solutions which evaporate upon application with reduced or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's).
Rattan components of which most of our products consist is sourced from sustained-yield managed forests. This means the methods used to grow and harvest the rattan vines ensure the long-term life of the forest and protect the biodiversity of the forest's ecosystems.
-
RECYCLING AND SITE MANAGEMENT
The company is committed to reduce consumption of all materials and packaging wherever possible and is committed to recycling packaging materials where practicable. This policy commits Pelican Reef to continuous environmental improvement, to be environmentally friendly, to demonstrate sound environmental performance, to prevent pollution and take actions that will lead to environmental sustainability. It applies to all our activities and their effect on our employees, contractors, suppliers, customers, the general public, and the world environment.

MANUFACTURING
The furniture factories use water-based glues, stains, topcoats and other finishes on ALL of their products. The switch from traditional solvent-based processes to water-based processes involved consolidating several processes by the factories. The result is an 85% reduction in VOC emissions today compared to 5 years ago. Any VOC emissions that are produced are captured by our emission control process. Water from the finishing process is cleaned and reused in a continuous loop.
The water-based finish technology used in the facilities was developed with our suppliers as a better alternative to solvent-based finishes. Our water-based finish is nearly VOC-free, is durable yet repairable, and produces a beautiful, clear product. Since these finishes cure faster there's less risk of damage to the products during shipping and installation.
Our production line is continuously monitored to assure minimum emission of harmful substances and raw materials waste.
With the lean manufacturing initiative which started in 2004, waste is minimized throughout the manufacturing process. Of the solid waste that is produced, 70% is recycled. Sawdust is picked up by landfills to absorb liquids and avoid leeching into groundwater. Rattan scrap is mixed with yard waste, composted and reused as topsoil. Any additional wood scrap and particleboard is picked up and burned in a waste-to-energy facility like the boiler system applied to rattan in the post-assembly process.
We have established programs to recycle manufacturing waste that in the past was sent to landfills. Examples of this include recycling corrugated cartons used in packaging. These materials are both recycled and recyclable.
-
ENERGY
Ample large windows and transparent roofing, in patterns, bring natural light into the manufacturing areas of the facilities. Plant lighting is closely monitored to maintain only the necessary amount of lighting, using natural daylight whenever it's possible.
Four dust collectors pull hot air out of the facility, cooling the facility in the process during the hot season. Natural ventilation through the factory's design plays a major role. Air from these same dust collectors is filtered, tested and released back into the facility, allowing the building to consume approximately 30% less energy.
-
WATER
A roof and groundwater collection system directs water into two retention ponds. Water from these ponds is used to irrigate landscaping when necessary. This process conserves 250,000 gallons of water each year. Grit and oil from repair and disposal sources is filtered by the ponds to ensure that any water entering the sewers is cleaned. Native plants used in landscaping minimize watering and maintenance. All of the facility's toilets are low flush, saving approximately 500,000 gallons of water each year. Pipes and weld points are lead-free for safe drinking water.

PRODUCTS
All of Pelican Reef products are green. From its basic raw materials of rattan poles, peels, leather, bamboo, abaca, lampacanay, wood, leather strips, and boards down to other materials like nails, staples, water-based adhesives, finishes, stains, glazes and packing materials: all have minimum impact to the environment and are safe, biodegradable and recycled and mostly recyclable. Aside from this, the products have undergone an environmentally-friendly process that makes them "greener".

RATTAN AND OTHER COMPONENTS
Pelican Reef has produced furniture for over two decades now. After years of changes and improvements made to its products, rattan has always been the main component of our products, particularly in chairs (comprising 50% or more). The rattan itself, comes from vines located in the most southern part of the forests in the Philippines. These vines are harvested upon maturation and a part of the vine remains after harvest to ensure that future growth is continuous and abundant. Suppliers of these rattan vines who ship the materials to Cebu are reliable and trusted. The harvested rattan poles also provide ample amounts of by-products like peels and wicker strips used for sub-processes. Shipments of such materials are legal upon presentation of approved papers by reliable suppliers. These rattan components are 100% biodegradable. This also applies to other raw materials that are used as decors or ornaments that comprise every final product shipped such as abaca, lampacanay, bamboo, etc.
Only high quality Mahogany, Lawaan and Gemelina woods from sustained reforested woodlands are used; we do not use wood from the tropical rainforests. We monitor and source the majority of our wood and solids from regional local sources in Southern Philippines, Sumatra and West Java in Indonesia. Using local suppliers reduces the distance materials must be shipped, and allows us to more easily conduct evaluations of their environmental practices.
-
MATERIALS
We carefully select our rattan, wood and other raw materials, after conducting environmental evaluations. Most products used are biodegradable and our main materials are for the most part rapidly renewable materials, such as bamboo (2 – 4 years growth time), natural fibers such as water hyacinth and abaca (1 year growth time), and rattan, cane and wicker materials (3 – 5 years growth time). In the case of wood, the mahogany that we use is procured from a plantation forest. The water-based adhesives, glues, stains, and coatings our factories use significantly reduce VOC emissions. Packing materials are corrugated cartons or paper products which are reusable, recyclable and biodegradable.
